Laurie Duxbury

I weave in my studio in Albemarle County, Virginia. I am fascinated by colors and their interaction, and enjoy blending multi-hued yarns at my looms to create clothing and home accessories. I first became interested in weaving and textile production when, as a child, I visited historic sites in my native Virginia. As I learned the craft of weaving, my interest evolved into a passion for expressing my own creativity through the combination of colorful threads and traditional patterns. Though I work in traditional techniques, my pieces reflect the elegance of contemporary design. I have studied in Sweden and throughout the United States. In addition to weaving for shows and commissions, I maintains a working studio and offers lectures, classes and workshops in other settings.

Textile Artist and Designer

I live and works at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. As a child I was fascinated by all things fiber and a visit to Colonial Williamsburg was a particular impression. I first learned to spin on a spinning wheel built by her grandfather. And, as spinners tend to hang out with weavers, spinning opened the gates to the rich fiber world of weaving. I have now been weaving for over 35 years.

Through conferences, weaving schools, and community college, I have learned to develop my own weaving voice. I enjoy doing shows and selling my work regionally. I have taught across the U.S. As a teacher, I hope each student understands what draws them to their craft. My goal for them is to begin to understand what they love about weaving and to help them develop the tools they need to express themselves through the craft. My favorite moments are when a student has an ‘aha’ experience. It is then that I know that the weaver has been inspired to continue in their growth as a craftsperson.
